Debuffer
1: Primary front anchor matches a Defender tank who wants to intercept damage first.
2: Adjacent front slot when another ally holds position 1; still in the melee line.
3: Middle front fallback when formation spacing pushes him slightly off the main focus.
Matthew is a Vindicators Defender who tanks from the front while occasionally pressuring back-line enemies and applying a damage-bonus debuff. His sap-and-gathering kit offers light control, but he lacks the durability tools and scaling of higher-rarity Defenders. Rare and Advanced Elite tanks and debuffers quickly replace him with stronger kits, stats, and ultimate weapons.
Pros & Cons
- Cheap early tank with back-row pressure and a debuff angle
- Stronger gathering passive than many Uncommons for economy
- Adds to Vindicators faction bonuses
- Only four skills with no fifth skill
- Lower stats than Advanced Elite Defenders
- No ultimate weapon and is replaced quickly by Rare+ front liners

Counters
- Any Advanced Elite carry (Hard Counter) — Advanced Elite carries and durable front lines outvalue Matthew’s mixed tank and debuff package.
Rating
D Tier. Uncommon D-tier hero with only four skills, no fifth skill, no UW, and stats below Advanced Elite. Quickly outclassed by higher-rarity tanks and debuffers and not worth investing in beyond the earliest chapters.

Trivia
- Matthew makes his first appearance during the tutorial for beginners, alongside McKinley. Later, Matthew fights alongside Natalie in the power room to retake it from zombies. That makes him the first Vindicator hero players can obtain.
- He also makes a brief appearance in a story cutscene, repelling zombies to rescue refugees from a zombie attack.
- Aside from David, he has the fastest gathering speed when in lineup; his speed pairs well with Park Ji-Mi’s 20% gathering speed boost at max level. Upgrading is quite easy as it only requires uncommon hero medals.
- Matthew equips a pair of Mk.2 grenades and has strong grenade-related skills.
- He had some arguments with Rebecca stemming from hostility between the Minutemen and Vindicators, with hostile actions occurring between the two as well. Thanks to Brady’s negotiation, further conflict was averted.
